Sidwell Friends Meeting House

The Quaker Meeting House at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC is featured in the March/April 2012 issue of GreenSource Magazine. This renovation of a non-descript 1950s gymnasium into a Quaker Meeting House and Arts Center addresses three fundamental challenges; transformation of the vast pedestrian space of the gym into a contemplative space for worship, enhancement of overall campus planning objectives, and the establishment of a welcoming and symbolically important front door to the campus. It is the most recently completed project envisioned in a 2001 master plan by KieranTimberlake for Sidwell Friends School, which outlines a phased transformation of the disparate buildings on two campuses into a physical manifestation of the school’s values, founded in the Quaker principle of environmental stewardship. It was announced last month that the Yale University School of Art Gallery and Sidwell Friends Middle School have received 2008 Western Red Cedar Architectural Design Awards, presented by The Western Red Cedar Lumber Association and The Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau.
